Dental Insurance and Overall Health

February 27, 2013

The famous Mayo Clinic released an article about oral health being a window to a person’s overall health.  Oral health is likely to be connected to and influence your overall health.  Often times the first sign of a disease may appear in the mouth.  Problems such as gum disease can cause problems in other parts of the body.   The mouth is filled with bacteria and poor hygiene or disease can provide an easy path for bacteria to enter the bloodstream through gums.

Although U.S. water fluoridation programs have helped decrease tooth decay many Americans still suffer from dental issues.  Many dental problems are highly preventable through proper oral care and preventive dental measures (cleaning for example).   A wide variety of dental plans are available that are affordable and one should not ignore the importance of having the right dental insurance plan.

California Health Plans offers an online dental insurance plan quotation system to help you find the right dental plan.  Within a few seconds you can view dental insurance plans from major carriers such as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  With so many affordable dental insurance plans to select from it may be difficult to decide but there is a function that allows you to select plans and compare them side by side.

Comparing plans side by side on the website of California Health Plans will quickly allow you to view benefits and see which dental insurance plan is right for you.  The type of coverage in a typical dental insurance plan includes:

  • Routine Check-Ups
  • Cleanings
  • X-Rays
  • Filings
  • Crowns
  • Dental Surgery
  • Gum Disease Treatment
  • Root Canals
  • Crowns and Dentures

A top rated insurance carrier such as Anthem Blue Cross offers several different types of plans.  Dental Blue PPO Plans allow one to see any dentist, outside the network, or at one of more than 20,000 Dental Blue provider locations.  Dental SelectHMO Plans from Anthem Blue Cross require one to pay only $5 per office visit for exams, cleanings, and x-rays.  Services under the Dental SelectHMO Plan must be with a participating dentist.  Individual Dental PPO Plans allow one to visit any of the 12,000+ participating Anthem Blue Cross network locations or a non-participating dentist (subject to a higher fee).

Blue Shield of California offers PPO dental plans and HMO dental plans.  Blue Shield has an extensive PPO network of nearly 20,000 general and specialty dentists in California.   The deducible is $25 or $50 per member per calendar year.  HMO Plans have no deductibles and one has access to over 8,6000 dental care providers.

If you lack dental insurance then visit California Health Plans to see how affordable dental plans are from top insurance carriers such as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California.  Taking care of your teeth and mouth is critical to maintaining the overall health of your body.  If you have any questions about dental insurance please call our agency at 1-800-585-1776 and we will happy to help you.
