On the outskirts of Los Angeles, approximately 30 minutes South of Los Angeles Airport, is a luxury resort called Terranea. This is an oceanfront resort that is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean with a spectacular view that often includes Catalina Island. The history of the Terranea site is very interesting as it once was the home of Marineland.
Marineland was a public aquarium and tourist attraction that opened in 1954. At that time it was the world’s largest oceanarium and was famous for its performing Orcas and for “Bubbles” the pilot whale. While in operation, numerous TV shows were filmed there including “Sea Hunt.” In 1987 Marineland closed and for years the pristine location was vacant. Finally in 2009, the Terranea resort opened but has yet to become well known.
Terranea sits on 102 acres, offering a 582-room resort, residential units, and much more. The resort has 8 unique restaurants, 9 –hole golf course, gorgeous spa, and ocean view pools. The resort also has walking and hiking trails that connect to the Palos Verdes Peninsula ocean trails system. Terranea is a great location for weddings, meetings, and special events.
For persons living in the Southern California region, a visit to Terranea is a destination that is very worthwhile.
